Independent Statistical Investigation

Today we began our Independent Statistical Investigation. We started by looking at good questions that would give us numerical data. We discussed the importance of choosing an investigation that will have a large range of data (e.g. not all the numbers under 20).

We had some great ideas for questions, including how long you spend doing homework each week, how long you spend participating in extra-curricular activities each week (e.g. dancing, sport, art, music), how long does it take to run the 100m, 200m or 400m.

Once we got our investigation question, we started collecting data from our classmates into a frequency table. We will hopefully get a chance to survey some of the other Year 6 children in Room 20 and 22.

The children have 5 exciting tasks to complete this investigation and at the end will display their results in either a booklet or a poster. I am really looking forward to the children putting their learning over the past few weeks into their own investigation.

Welcome!

Welcome to Room 21 2019! It is such a pleasure to be getting to know your children over the past few days. What a great class we have - full of diversity and positiveness. The class is settling well and learning the expected routines. Our learning journey is well underway and see how the children are so excited to learn news things and take on new challenges in their learning. In Writing, we have just completed our 'What Summer Means' poem and I was delighted with the quality of our poems. If you have a chance, please feel free to pop into Room 21 and look at our published copies hanging up - they are well worth a read. In Reading, we will be looking at a range of texts and predicting and making connections. In Maths, we are focusing on Statistics. We have already begun looking into efficient ways to collate data. Inquiry - Learning Pit

Today in Inquiry, we looked at 'The Learning Pit'. We love the learning pit as a toll because it shows us that it's ok to struggle with our learning, that it's natural that some things are harder to learn than others, it's ok to seek help in our learning. By going through this process our learning is deeper and more meaningful and we will be more successful. As a class we talked about there are different stages when learning something new. We start by facing a challenge and this is the time when we could feel anxious, nervous or even scared about what is ahead of us. We 'fall' into the pit (Deep Learning) and start feeling confused, thinking it's all too hard. Then we start to realise that if we ask for help, keep trying and ask questions, we can begin to climb up out of the pit.
